2015 Conference and Professional Development Workshop - Portage College, Lac la Biche Alberta

Professional Development Activities

Portage College demonstrated non-invasive hair collection methods for DNA sampling of fur bearing mammals.

Portage instructors gave a hands-on lesson on invertebrate sampling and identification to assess wetland health.
The group toured riparian habitat and was instructed on current technologies of habitat protection in the event of an oil spill.
We also looked at boreal forest fracturing by oil and gas activities; roads, seismic lines, pipelines, power lines and the well pads themselves, and toured a Steam Assist Gravity Drain (SAGD) operations vs oil sand strip mining at Syncrude near Fort McMurray Alberta.
